Here, fishing, ship-building and olive growing are the main occupations for locals, and this bustling town has a host of things to offer, from secluded bays, wonderfully fresh seafood and mouth-watering restaurants, head here to escape the masses and get a feel for the genuine, true Dalmatia. SKRIP On Brac’s north coast, this hamlet is this island’s oldest settlement and home to a couple of charming museums. Dating back over 300 years, hilltop Skrip is great for a peaceful afternoon wandering historic streets and exploring its charming museums. SUPETAR Although Supetar is small, it’s the largest town on the island. As soon as you land on Brac (after the short ferry hop from Split), you’ll be drawn to the aromas coming from the bustling harbourside restaurants. Here the fish is fresh and the olive oil is always locally produced. On a practical note, there are several small supermarkets where you can buy standard provisions and a couple of local bakeries for fresh bread. BOL On the south coast, this little town is well worth a visit. See the Dominican Monastery and the Deškoviæ Gallery, then spend the afternoon bathing on neaby Zlatni Rat beach or climbing Vidova Gora.  Island HoppingHVAR  Long, lean Hvar Is Croatia’s most luxurious beach destination. Hvar Town offers elegant restaurants and a general sense that, this is the place to see and be seen - rub shoulders with young partygoers, dancing on tables at the town's legendary beach bars.   For something more subdued, head to the northern coastal towns of Stari Grad and Jelsa. In between, Hvar's interior hides abandoned ancient hamlets, craggy peaks, vineyards and the lavender fields that the island is famous for. The island's southern coast has some of Hvar’s most beautiful and isolated coves. BISEVO Five nautical miles from Komiža, Biševo is best known for its rare natural phenomenon, the Blue Cave.  The cave interior and the sea inside it are illuminated with an indescribable silver-blue light. The rays of sun passing into the cave through a small crack in its ceiling are reflected in the sea, creating incredible light effects.  On the island there is also Medvedina špilja (‘Monk seals’ cave) – a cave where the Mediterranean monk seal used to reside. You can swim and snorkel inside the cave and see a small beach where Monk seals used to come ashore. SPLIT  Croatia’s alluring second largest city faces the twinkling Adriatic, with its shops, restaurants, churches and houses built into the ancient walls. There are several good beaches, with sandy Bačvice being the closest (and busiest).  VIS  Crystal clear, glistening warm waters lap gently against the shore, and there are ample spots for swimming.   The island hub, Vis Town is on the north east coast, with the main marina, ferry port and a sweet chapel. There’s plenty of opportunities for long, relaxed meals - try one of many wonderful restaurants in the Kut neighbourhood.   With friendly locals, buzzy little bars and deliciously fresh seafood straight from the fisherman’s boat, it’s little it was chosen as the location for Mamma Mia 2.   TROGIR  A World Heritage Site, Trogir is an exquisite medieval walled city with four Gothic campaniles, set on a tiny island linked to the mainland by a bridge. In the heart of town, St. Lawrence Cathedral has some of the finest carvings in Croatia and the bell tower offers wonderful rooftop views.  Trogir’s warren-like streets are home to some interesting boutiques and courtyard cafés, as well as a handful of churches, renaissance palaces and museums. If you walk a little further round the coast to Beach Jezero it’s quieter but you swim from the rocks. Zlatni Rat Beach, Bol Known as the famous ‘Golden Horn’ spit, this beach is perfect for kitesurfing, windsurfing and stand-up paddle boarding. In the nearby pine forest, you’ll find hip Auro Lounge Bar, which serves great cocktails. Tri Mosta, Supetar The 'Three Bridges' beach is just past the cemetery. There's a good restaurant and you can rent boats and jet skis nearby. Banj, Supetar Supetar's main beach is a large eastward-facing curve lined with pine trees and beach bars. Vrilo, Supetar This beach is close to the ferry wharf, immediately east of the town centre. Vlačica, Supetar The closest beach to the west of the old town. Vela Luka, Supetar A lovely little beach set on a peaceful bay. Do & See Island of Brac Museum, Skrip  Perfect for getting a little context on the island towards the beginning of your trip, this lovely little museum is carefully curated and very informative. Having been restored, you can now see many of the original tools as well as demonstrations of how it all worked.     muzejuja.com  Vidova Gora, near Bol Walk or mountain bike to the top of Vidova Gora (780m), the highest peak on the Croatian islands, for fantastic views over the sea to Hvar, with Vis rising on the horizon. Blanca Monastery, near Bol Trek to the Franciscan Blanca Monastery, originally established in 1551. Afterwards, reward yourselves with lunch at Konoba Vidova Gora. Stonemason School, Pucisca Brac is famous for its stonemasonry and this school has been in operation since 1909. Located In Pucisca, students come to study here for 3-4 years. It’s amazing to see the skill, effort and craftsmanship involved in the students work, with some pieces taking teams of students multiple years to complete. Scuba Diving, Supetar Amber Dive Center can arrange dives to underwater caves and wrecks, as well as courses for those looking to learn. For a low effort option, you can try snorkelling too. Aqua Park, near Bol The inflatable water park at Bol has a floating course that you can run, jump and slide across. With different obstacles, it’s a bit like being on your own episode of Wipe Out (although perhaps a little less intense). Bol | stina-vino.hr Diocletian’s Palace  City life still focuses on the remarkable and extensive Roman remains of Diocletian’s Palace. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, these Roman remains were built as an imperial palace and military fortress for the emperor. Dating back to the 4th century AD, city life still swirls around them. Split Cinema There is a great retro outdoor cinema in Bol; the entrance is opposite the Marinero Bar. They  tend to screen two films per night, so keep an eye out for the posters around town to see what’s showing and when. The picturesque old town has some of the area’s best panoramic views and is in the heart of truffle country. It also known for hosting an annual film festival, during which the town square becomes an open air cinema. Not to be missed. ZAMASK Rural hamlets don’t get much sleepier than Zamask, which has just 19 permanent residents and breathtaking hilltop views across Istria. In the 16th century, the Austrian-Venetian border passed directly through Zamask, meaning neighbouring villagers lived in different states. It remained that way until the fall of the Venetian Republic in 1797. Today the village has two churches – both worth visiting. LIVADE Home to one of the region’s best truffle restaurants and an annual truffle festival. Located a 10 minute drive from Motovun and a 15 minute drive from Zamask. VISNJAN Despite being famed for its world class observatory, Visnjan is also a traditional village with ancient town walls, a beautiful Baroque church, a central square and far reaching views to the distant sea. PULA Sitting on the southern coast, Istrian capital, Pula, is a large red roofed working port town with a wealth of Roman history just waiting to be discovered. In terms of present day activity, you’ll find a thriving café culture, a lively arts scene and a marina popular with the yacht crowd. There’s also a fresh produce market for stocking up on tasty ingredients. POREC This popular resort town sits on the north west coast of Istria, around 35 minutes’ drive from Motovun. The old town is wonderfully picturesque, with grand waterfront Venetian architecture and grid-like streets that hark back to its Roman origins. It swells with visitors during the summer months, but is well worth a visit for its 6th century UNESCO listed Euphrasian Basilica, one of Europe’s finest intact examples of Byzantine art. While you’re here, stroll the promenades, gaze across the lagoons and relax on the pebble beach (or head along the coast in search of beaches with watersports). ROVINJ One of Istria’s most admired coastal towns, the fishing port of Rovinj combines steep cobbled streets with sleepy piazzas and pastel hued medieval homes. It’s reminiscent of Burano, in Venice, and is topped by the Baroque Church of St. Euphemia. Having become a popular tourist destination, it now offers a wealth of galleries, museums, restaurants and cocktail bars. While you stroll around the town, be sure to seek out the tumbling Grisia street, an informal open air gallery where local artists display and sell their works. Be aware that it can get very busy during summer. NOVIGRAD Some describe the coastal town of Novigrad as Croatia’s answer to Portofino. Despite its small size, Novigrad is known for its foodie scene, especially the excellent seafood. The local speciality is kapešante (scallops). Don’t miss the bustling fish market, surrounded by cafés. Being on the north west coast, the historic old town pairs well with a beach visit – head just outside town for shingle shores and calm waters. HUM Said to be the smallest town in the world, this tiny inland settlement was originally built as a 12th century Venetian castle. Eventually, its walls and towers were converted into homes. Today there is a restaurant and a bar as well. It sits on a hill in the centre of Istria, with fabulous views and forest walks all around. ROC Sitting high above the verdant countryside, this medieval town has just 170 inhabitants living its virtually unchanged medieval buildings. It’s dominated by a 15th century bell tower, belonging to one of three churches within the town walls. MOSCENICKA DRAGA This small east coast town tumbles down a forested hill to a wonderful pebble beach perfect for swimming. Culture vultures will appreciate its seafaring history at the Maritime Museum and there are some excellent restaurants to make the most of that freshly caught seafood.GROZNJAN Despite being a beautiful Venetian hilltop village with a history dating back to the 12th century, Groznjan was once crumbling swiftly into decline. That is until the 1960s, when sculptor Aleksandar Rukavina and a small group of artists discovered its picturesque medieval appeal and set up their studios in its empty buildings. Today, Groznjan is known as the “Town of Artists” and visitors flock to view the informal street galleries, artists’ studios and music performances that make this place so unique. Travel writer Kevin Rushby described a trail from Motovun where “butterflies cloud the air, deer spring away through meadows, and frogs freckle the ponds and puddles… magnificent walking country”. There are countless walking and cycling routes to choose from, with something for every ability. From Zamask there are walking routes to Kascerge (4km) and Motovun (9km). It’s interspersed with angular rock promontories which shelve into the sea. Active types can hire boats and go windsurfing, plus there are a couple of handy beach bars. Monte Beach, Rovinj A series of rocky beach outcrops accessed on foot from Rovinj old town. Good for swimming and convenient for combining with sightseeing. Kurent Bay, Rovinj Located 1.5km from Rovinj town, this shingle beach is shaded by the surrounding conifer forest and offers good swimming. There’s a snack bar and a large meadow nearby for playing frisbee, badminton or volleyball. Karpinjan Beach, Novigrad A curved sweep of shingle beach looking on to a calm shallow bay. There are sunbeds shaded by pavilions and pine trees, showers and a beach bar. Novigrad is just 1km along the coast. Brulo Beach, Porec Just south of Porec, shingle Brulo Beach gazes onto a sheltered Blue Flag bay. Watersports are available and there are sunbeds and umbrellas to rent, plus a few eateries nearby. Borik Beach, near Porec To the north of Porec, Borik Beach has lovely views back to the old town. It is a more organised beach with a wealth of facilities: sunbeds, pedaloes, volleyball, mini-golf and a children’s playground. There are a couple of restaurants nearby too. Oliva Beach, near Porec Just a 5 minute boat ride across the water from Porec, you’ll find the tiny island of St Nikola. In the north, Beli village has a griffon vulture sanctuary and a sleepy pebble beach. Along the west coast, the peaceful village of Lubenice dates back 4,000 years and hides a blue grotto beneath it. For an alternative viewpoint, explore the coastline by boat or kayak – great for discovering remote shingle beaches. BRIJUNI Once a playground for the rich and famous, on General Tito’s surreal island you can see a villa in which Sophia Loren stayed, a safari park and an 18 hole golf course, kept manicured by grazing deer. VENICE, Rialto Islands Archipelago If you’re feeling adventurous, it is quite possible to reach the islands that make up Venice (as well as nearby Murano, Burano and Lido di Venezia). From Pula, on the south west coast, it’s a 2 hour ferry ride across the Adriatic to Italy’s famous ‘Floating City’. That said, do take the time to have a good wander around town. There’s the beautiful Piazza Grande with the Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Nobili-Tarugi, cathedral and tower (with a great view from the top). If you’ve got some spare time, visit the Sant Agostino church and small museum, too. LAKE TRASIMENO At 128 square kilometres, this is Italy’s fourth largest lake and holds three islands within its waters: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese. A 50km cycle path traces the circumference of the lake, affording spectacular views along the way. There’s also a long trail network for exploring the surrounding hills, including several historical town centres, villages and castles. Castiglione del Lago town makes a great base. Its streets are peppered with restaurants, bars and gelaterias. Wander the crumbling palazzi, search out the Etruscan Academy Museum of Cortona (MAEC) and enjoy the excellent shopping opportunities for leather goods, handmade books, stationery and lovely children’s clothes. CITTÀ DELLA PIEVE As soon as you walk into this wonderful medieval town, you are immediately struck by the beautiful brickwork and the elegance of the main street as it winds upwards towards the piazza. This area is famous for its clay soils, and for having no natural areas of stone. As a result, centuries ago this was a centre for brick making. The real joy of Città della Pieve is in taking a leisurely wander around the tiny side streets and trying to find reputedly Italy’s narrowest street, the famous Via Della Baciadonna. Narrow enough to be able to kiss the person in the opposite window by just leaning out of yours, it makes for a charming photo opportunity. PERUGIA Where ancient and modern Umbria marry. A former Etruscan stronghold with a turbulent history, Perugia had a dose of the black plague in 1348, suffered the Castro War from 1642 to 1644, and experienced an 18th century French invasion. However, unlike Assisi, Perugia is a city first and foremost, not a tourist attraction. English isn’t widely spoken, prosecco is sipped at alfresco cafés and Fiat 500 drivers – old and new – make spaces out of nothing on the ancient cobbled streets. The city's main piazza, home to the dusty rose Palazzo dei Priori is a good place to start. While you’re there, throw a coin in the 12th century Fontana Maggiore (The Great Fountain). SIENA A UNESCO World Heritage site, Siena is one of Italy’s most visited cities, famous for its cuisine, art, museums and medieval cityscape. Piazza del Campo, the shell-shaped town square, plays host to the famous biannual Palio horse race, so observers can watch the competition while also admiring the square’s various architectural treasures. AREZZO To the north west of Perugia, Arezzo is a city rich in art and architecture, yet mostly free of crowds. The medieval centre was destroyed during WWII but there are still lots of fabulous monuments and buildings. Go to the Piazza Grande – built on a slant and surrounded by an attractive jumble of palazzos, towers and churches in which medieval and renaissance styles vie for supremacy. This is the focal point of Arezzo’s famous antique fair and the Giostra del Saracino. ASSISI Just east of Perugia, the beautiful hill town of Assisi, on the slopes of Monte Subasio, is one of the Christian world’s most important pilgrimage sites. As the birthplace of Saint Francis, Italy's patron saint (not to mention man of miracles and universal symbol of peace), this ancient town now attracts an estimated 5 million visitors per year. Once a simple agricultural town, today’s gentrified Todi is a trendy retreat for foreign expats and Rome’s arts and media types. At its heart, the lovely Piazza del Popolo has plenty of good cafés and restaurants, plus you can climb the tower of San Fortunato church for fabulous views. Once you arrive, bypass the city gates and use the well signposted Porta Orvietana car park instead. Rather than having to climb the seriously steep hill into the centre, you will instead be able to ride up in style via the (free) lift. ORVIETO Just west of Todi, the glow of this small city is beautiful from every angle. With architecture reminiscent of both Florence and Rome, its exquisite cathedral façade reflects the golden light of sunset like few others in the world. There are lots of shops and bars/restaurants, fabulous delis and wonderful bakeries. Well worth a visit. MONTEPULCIANO Surrounded by vineyards, this medieval hill top town is best known for a sight just outside the town, the splendid Madonna di San Biagio church. That said, do take the time to have a good wander around town. There’s the beautiful Piazza Grande with the Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Nobili-Tarugi, Cathedral and tower (with a great view from the top). If you’ve got some spare time, visit the Sant Agostino church and small museum, too. BEVAGNA Umbria’s foodie capital with several restaurants crammed into its small centre. It is home to not one but two stunning Romanesque churches. TERNI The unlikely birthplace of St Valentine, bishop of the town until his martyrdom. He is now entombed in his personal basilica at nearby San Valentino. Despite its history, it would be hard to imagine a less romantic city than Terni. Because of its important arms and steel industries, it was a target for Allied bombing in 1944 and 80% of the town was reduced to rubble. Its other claim to fame… the gun used to assassinate President Kennedy was made here. However, the surrounding area is lovely and you can’t miss the stunning Marmore Waterfall, just outside town (see Do & See.) Once a simple agricultural town, today’s gentrified Todi is a trendy retreat for foreign expats and Rome’s arts and media types. At its heart, the lovely Piazza del Popolo has plenty of good cafés and restaurants, plus you can climb the tower of San Fortunato church for fabulous views. Once you arrive, bypass the city gates and use the well signposted Porta Orvietana car park instead. Rather than having to climb the seriously steep hill into the centre, you will instead be able to ride up in style via the (free) lift. ORVIETO Just west of Todi, the glow of this small city is beautiful from every angle. With architecture reminiscent of both Florence and Rome, its exquisite cathedral façade reflects the golden light of sunset like few others in the world. There are lots of shops and bars/restaurants, fabulous delis and wonderful bakeries. Well worth a visit. MONTEPULCIANO Surrounded by vineyards, this medieval hill top town is best known for a sight just outside the town, the splendid Madonna di San Biagio church. That said, do take the time to have a good wander around town. There’s the beautiful Piazza Grande with the Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Nobili-Tarugi, Cathedral and tower (with a great view from the top). If you’ve got some spare time, visit the Sant Agostino church and small museum, too. BEVAGNA Umbria’s foodie capital with several restaurants crammed into its small centre. It is home to not one but two stunning Romanesque churches. TERNI The unlikely birthplace of St Valentine, bishop of the town until his martyrdom. He is now entombed in his personal basilica at nearby San Valentino. Despite its history, it would be hard to imagine a less romantic city than Terni. Because of its important arms and steel industries, it was a target for Allied bombing in 1944 and 80% of the town was reduced to rubble. Its other claim to fame… the gun used to assassinate President Kennedy was made here. However, the surrounding area is lovely and you can’t miss the stunning Marmore Waterfall, just outside town (see Do & See.) The shaded garden ‘Giardini della Piero Francesco’ is where locals gather in the evenings and every Friday evening from June to September there’s a flea market in the historic centre. ANGHIARI Set in the Valtiberina (Tiber valley) this beautiful hilltop town looks like something created by Walt Disney; with spiralling turrets, terracotta roofs and orginal medieval walls. The centre of the town has some wonderful restaurants. CITTA DI CASTELLO, NORTH UMBRIA On a slope of the Apennines, this charming town has a twice weekly market (Thursday & Saturday), shops, tempting restaurants, and some interesting places to visit. The covered fruit and vegetable market is a must for fresh produce. AREZZO To the north west of Perugia, Arezzo is a city rich in art and architecture, yet mostly free of crowds. Go to the Piazza Grande – built on a slant and surrounded by an attractive jumble of palazzos, towers and churches in which medieval and renaissance styles vie for supremacy. This is the focal point of Arezzo’s famous antique fair and the Giostra del Saracino. LAKE TRASIMENO At 128 square kilometres, this is Italy’s fourth largest lake and holds three islands within its waters: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese. A 50km cycle path traces the circumference of the lake, affording spectacular views along the way. There’s also a long trail network for exploring the surrounding hills, including several historical town centres, villages and castles. Castiglione del Lago town makes a great base. Its streets are peppered with restaurants, bars and gelaterias. Indeed, the Palio di Siena, a chaotic bareback horse race run twice each summer, turns the piazza into a dirt track and the city into something electric and tribal. Local pride is strong here, with each contrada (neighbourhood) having its own flag and mascot. Cars are mostly kept at bay at the edges of the city, so footsteps echoing off stone and the chiming of the Duomo bells set the rhythm of the day. This is the focal point of Arezzo’s famous antique fair and the Giostra del Saracino. LAKE TRASIMENO At 128 square kilometres, this is Italy’s fourth largest lake and holds three islands within its waters: Maggiore, Minore and Polvese. A 50km cycle path traces the circumference of the lake, affording spectacular views along the way. There’s also a long trail network for exploring the surrounding hills, including several historical town centres, villages and castles. Castiglione del Lago town makes a great base. Its streets are peppered with restaurants, bars and gelaterias. At its heart, the lovely Piazza del Popolo has plenty of good cafés and restaurants, plus you can climb the tower of San Fortunato church for fabulous views. Once you arrive, bypass the city gates and use the well signposted Porta Orvietana car park instead. Rather than having to climb the seriously steep hill into the centre, you will instead be able to ride up in style via the (free) lift. It is home to not one but two stunning Romanesque churches. TERNI The unlikely birthplace of St Valentine, bishop of the town until his martyrdom. He is now entombed in his personal basilica at nearby San Valentino. Despite its history, it would be hard to imagine a less romantic city than Terni. Because of its important arms and steel industries, it was a target for Allied bombing in 1944 and 80% of the town was reduced to rubble. Its other claim to fame… the gun used to assassinate President Kennedy was made here. However, the surrounding area is lovely and you can’t miss the stunning Marmore Waterfall, just outside town (see Do & See.)  Dining & Drinks There are 2 bars in San Terenziano, Cafe Deluxe and Bar Sport.
