Unmissable Paxos

Secret gems from our stomping ground...

Towns & Villages

GAIOS
On the south coast, island capital Gaios spreads along the waterfront, with a Venetian harbour, a ruined fortress and red tiled buildings. Gaios has the biggest supermarket on the island (with a good wine fridge at the back) as well as three smaller ones. It also has two bakeries, two fishmongers and two butchers.

LOGGOS
Just south of Lakka, on the east coast of Paxos, beautiful Loggos is the smallest of the three main villages. Loggos has three minimarkets and one of the best bakeries on the island, with a variety of fresh bread and cakes made on the premises.

LAKKA
At the northern tip of the island, Lakka is considered Paxos’ second port. It is a very pretty horseshoe shaped village, flanked by higher ground on each side. Enjoy a drink in one of the waterside bars and watch the beautiful people coming in from the sea each evening. Lakka has three minimarkets, as well as a bakery, a butcher and a very good wine shop, where you can order in advance.

MAGAZIA
This sleepy hamlet is in the middle of the island, its name literally means ‘shop’. It’s very peaceful and its central location makes it a popular pitstop or base from which to explore the island by car. Magazia has a bakery, and a mini market on the main road – it’s always fully stocked, they have a butcher’s counter.

FONTANA
A tiny inland hamlet near Loggos, with little more than a church, a taverna and a ‘kafenion’. This is a peaceful spot in which to escape the 21st century, with some charming houses, lovely walks, a tennis court and beaches nearby.

ANTIPAXOS
You must go to the beautiful island of Anti Paxos! When you get there, you’ll understand why... just south of Paxos, this tiny island is a sight to behold.

Restaurants

*Establishments with a star are our absolute favourites.

Meditteraneo
On the edge of Gaios, and right on the water, the food here is delicious and the setting could not be more perfect. It is great for lunch or supper, with traditional Greek food including fabulous sardines and wonderful cuttlefish risotto. Park in the main car park and walk to the seafront, then head left until you reach the restaurant.

La Rosa di Paxos
A harbourfront restaurant serving great Greek food and fresh fish in a lovely position, with white tablecloths, a good wine list and big wine glasses (just what we like!). They make a delicious beetroot salad and the carpaccio of beef is memorable, as is the fresh bream (choose your own and ask what is fresh in that day), the pasta chef is also incredible.
Lakka |  +30 2662 031471

Akis Fish Bar & Restaurant*
Right on the sea, Akis faces all the beautiful sailing boats which have moored up for the night. This cocktail bar serves some of the best fish in Lakka. Meet here for early drinks before supper. Or, if you’re eating elsewhere, come here for late drinks. It’s usually lovely and quiet at lunchtime, so you can just moor up your boat and enjoy delicious seafood while relaxing in their HUGE white chairs on the terrace.
Lakka | +30 2662 031 247

Diogenis*
A real find, this is a proper locals’ restaurant serving probably the best traditional Greek food on Paxos. Few tourists know about it, but those who stumble through its doors are delighted. Look for the vine draped pergola in front of the yellow house, in the tiny square between the car park and the sea.
Lakka | +30 266 20 31 442

Central Lakka has a large ‘kafenion’ opposite Diogenis Taverna. The little square in the evening has a real buzz about it, plus Matilda’s ice cream is next door.

Vasilis Restaurant*

Koxili Restaurant
Situated on the waterfront, serving pasta and fish
Loggos

Bournaos
Coming from Loggos, just after the fire station, you will find this small roadside ‘kafenion’ (informal café) on the right-hand side. Having been here since 1953, its interior is filled with curiosities and it now sells everything from sweets to cigarettes and alcohol. There is a little shaded garden area to the left that is perfect for people watching, as it’s on the main road through the island. Open pretty much all day every day and a favourite among locals.
Magazia

Steki Tou Pappou
Opposite the small supermarket, serves good food.
Magazia

Averto*
A hidden gem with outdoor seating and spectacular views (thanks to the inland hillside location). Serves exotic Greek food with a twist. It’s lovely in the evening, when you are surrounded by candles and fairy lights - perfect for cocktails over large sharing platters. The mornings are also a treat, with good coffee and the only vegan breakfast on this island.
Magazia | +30 2662 030239

Erimitis Sunset Bar, Near Magazia
This clifftop bar is one of the best and most spectacular places to eat on the island - we’d go so far as to say that no trip to Paxos is complete without seeing the sunset from its cocktail terrace. The food is local and delicious, think octopus carpaccio, seabass, chicken fillet stuffed with rocket pesto and prawns with mango wrapped in kataifi pastry. (There’s also a children’s menu.) always busy in August, so best to book a table for dusk.
Magazia | +30 697 775 3499 | erimitis.com

O Dolos
Don’t be put off by this small establishment’s roadside setting, the food is excellent and they’re very popular as a result. They serve fantastic spit-roasts - especially the pork - as well as fabulous grilled sardines and beautifully fresh tzatziki. More reasonably priced than some of the waterfront restaurants. Book ahead.
Fontana | +30 26620 31 296

Kareklas
Close to the taverna, you will find the Kareklas ‘kafenion’. It used to be the owners’ fathers’ workshop and he tends to serve whatever is fresh, so there’s no real menu. It’s a great little place.
Fontana | +30 697 669 0058

Thymari Restaurant
A new, family run restaurant with a great selection of dishes, local flavours and a great wine list. A beautiful garden setting, so you are sure to have a memorable meal.
Bogdanatika | +30 2622 030118

Carnayo Gold
A very popular place right on the waterfront serving drinks, cocktails, light snacks and pizzas - well worth a visit during the day or evening. Good for when renting a boat as you can moor directly on the jetty – worth calling ahead. Unsuitable for small children due to high drops.
Mongonissi | +30 2662 032650

Mongonissi Taverna
Right on the beach and perfect for families with small children. Serving traditional Greek cuisine in a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere, it allows for many a lazy lunch. It is also an evening venue, with Greek dancing some nights (this changes throughout the season so it’s best to check before you go).

Ben’s Bar & Restaurant*
An institution and not to be missed, come for lunch or early evening cocktails. This is where all the beautiful Italians flock during August. Ben and his mother, Efi, run this Greek restaurant with so much pride. The fish and salads are fresh and delicious. Ask Efi for recommendations. If you’re here for lunch, you can reserve sunbeds on the wooden decking by calling in the morning (do ask for Ben or Efi and say you are a Scott Williams client).
Monodendri | +30 697 41 05 529

Bastas’ Taverna
Children and adults alike love this beach taverna. It’s great for lunch, but it also has a swimming pool, sunbeds and a wooden walkway over pebbles and into the sea. They serve fresh, traditional Greek food and there are great Instagram opportunities – octopus hang from the trees, drying out for the barbecue. There’s no telephone so drop in and book for the following day. Alternatively, our staff can call someone local to book a table for you.

Beaches

MONGONISSI BEACH
At the southern point of Paxos lies Mongonissi, one of the only sandy beaches on the island. There is a family run taverna. Boats can be moored along the jetty and, for the more energetic, canoes and paddle boats can be hired.

KAKI LANGADA BEACH
Located at the foot of Fontana Village, this long, pebbled beach has views of the mainland, but no facilities. Great for those who prefer a more natural beach experience.

LEVRECCHIO BEACH
A fine shingle beach about 5 minutes’ walk south of Loggos. It has one of the best beach tavernas on Paxos, plus it’s possible to rent canoes and dinghy sailing boats.

MARMARI BEACH
A pretty little beach that has olive trees to provide natural shade. It is accessible from Levrecchio Beach - walk to the left of Bouloukos Taverna, then look for a small sign for the path to Marmari Beach (on the left).

KIPOS BEACH
Kipos doesn’t have any natural shade or sunbeds and umbrellas, but we love it nonetheless. To get there, walk from Marmari Beach, following the stone path up the hill. Keep the stone wall on your left until you come out at a country lane. Bear left and walk for about 50m, the road then comes to an end and another path begins. Please be careful as it is quite a rough, rocky path and can be very slippery if it has been raining. Alternatively, you could drive straight down to the beach (10 minutes’ from Loggos).

KIPIADI BEACH
This beautiful half moon bay is another stony beach, but the stones here are quite flat. Again, there is no natural shade. Kipiadi is signposted well after leaving the main road down into Loggos.

HARAMI & KANONI BEACHES
Two lovely beaches inside the sheltered bay of Lakka, with beautiful clear waters and a sandy gently shelving sea floor - very popular with families. Above the shoreline are bright sun-bleached pebbles. These beaches are perfect for swimming, plus there’s a great waterfront taverna with delicious calamari.

ORKOS & LAKKOS BEACHES
Both beautiful, peaceful pebble beaches located near Lakka. They don’t have any facilities and are reached via a woodland footpath down the hill or by boat.

MONODENDRI BEACH
Monodendri (single tree) is the most popular and coolest beach along the coast between Lakka and Loggos. It has several facilities, including a great swimming pool for children and two good tavernas as well as basic water sports. There’s usually a masseur available too, just ask at Ben’s Bar and Restaurant.

GLYFADA BEACH
Further south from Monodendri, Glyfada Beach can only be reached along a steep footpath or from the water.

KLONI GOULI BEACH
A tiny pebble beach with calm waters and a relaxed beach bar – sunbeds and drinks. Very chilled out.

ANTI PAXOS
The beaches of Voutoumi (pebbles) and Vrika (white sand) are stunning, with crystal clear water providing outstanding snorkelling conditions, safe for all ages to enjoy. There is a stunning clifftop path linking the two, while to the south there are many smaller, more private coves that can be reached without too much difficulty. At the height of summer, it is advisable to arrive earlier in the day as the beaches can fill up by early afternoon.

On the Water

BOAT HIRE
The single best way to visit the island’s numerous beaches and blue caves is by boat. Head to one of the three main villages and hire one by the day; there are several boat hire firms in Loggos, two in Gaios and two in Lakka. Boats need to be returned by late afternoon/early evening, as you cannot keep a boat overnight in Paxos. If you want to venture to Anti Paxos a 30HP engine is required.

WATER SPORTS
At Monodendri Beach, Ben’s Bar offers “laid back” water sports: single handed dingy sailing, pedalo and canoe hire; earlier and later in the season, windsurfing can also be arranged. Speak to Ben, who is behind the bar, about booking. At Levrecchio Beach, canoes and dinghy sailing boats are available to rent, and Photis offers fabulous massages.

SNORKELLING
All around the island there is fabulous snorkelling, thanks to the clarity of the water and the rocky coastline. Basic equipment can be bought in local shops. The more serious snorkelers amongst you will need to take your own equipment.

SCUBA DIVING, LAKKA
Oasi Sub Scuba Diving Club, based in Lakka, offer wreck diving, night diving, diving courses and fun scuba diving. Booking ahead in July and August is advisable.

SCUBA DIVING, GAIOS
Diving is also offered by a local Paxiot, Babis, at Water Planet. He is PADI qualified, speaks good English and can take people from beginner to advanced. Call or find him on the road into Gaios waterfront (opposite the florist, before Kirky Bar).

Food Shopping

There are no huge supermarkets on Paxos, but each village has a minimarket and a few shops. Some deliver – just ask.

Gaios has the biggest supermarket on the island (with a good wine fridge at the back) as well as three smaller ones. It also has two bakeries, two fishmongers and two butchers.

Lakka has three minimarkets, as well as a bakery, a butcher and a very good wine shop, where you can order in advance.

Loggos has three minimarkets and one of the best bakeries on the island, with a variety of fresh bread and cakes made on the premises.

Money & Currency Exchange

There are no banks on Paxos. There are 4 ATMs in Gaios.

In Lakka, Planos Holidays office has an ATM in the wall (in the car park). In Loggos, the Planos office will exchange funds, plus there are two ATMs.

Travelling Home

If you have booked to return to Corfu by sea taxi, they have a strict cancellation policy and you will be charged for a cancelled boat. They get booked up all summer long so must adhere to their departure times strictly.

If you find yourself with time to kill in Corfu Town before to your flight, do visit seafront Naok-Azur beach bar and café. It is run by Maria, a friend of Victoria’s. If you ask nicely, you will be able to leave your luggage there while you wander into town.

For more places along the Corfu waterfront, just ask your Scott Williams representative for their recommendations.

Please call first to check restaurants and museums are open, and check the relevant government guidance before travelling.

No responsibilty can be accepted by Scott Williams for any issues that may arise as a result of the enclosed recommendations and information.
