Our guide to the local secret gems...
Towns & Villages
GUBBIO, NORTH UMBRIA
There is something otherworldly about this stunning medieval town (about an hour’s drive south east of Citta di Castello). Sitting on Monte Ingino’s steep slopes, it feels a little more angular and imposing than many of its neighboring towns. In the Civic Museum, you’ll find the famous Eugubine Tablets: seven bronze slabs dating from the second or first century BC. Discovered in 1444, they exhibit inscriptions in the extinct ancient Umbria language, using a modified Etruscan alphabet. There are plenty of restaurants and bars dotted throughout the labyrinthine streets which are lovely to stroll along exploring in the evening.
PERUGIA, CENTRAL UMBRIA
Where ancient and modern Umbria marry. A former Etruscan stronghold with a turbulent history, Perugia is no slouch when it comes to antiquities. It had a dose of the black plague in 1348, suffered the Castro War (1642 - 1644) and an 18th century French invasion.
However, unlike Assisi, Perugia is a city first and foremost, not a tourist attraction. English isn’t widely spoken, prosecco is sipped at alfresco cafés and Fiat 500 drivers – old and new – make spaces out of nothing on the ancient cobbled streets. The city’s main piazza, home to the dusty rose architecture of Palazzo dei Priori is a good place to start. While you’re there, throw a coin in the 12th century Fontana Maggiore (The Great Fountain).
GUALDO TADINO
Dotted with local restaurants, bars and all the necessary shops along with a museum dedicated to the reknowned production of ceramics. It also has a couple of supermarkets on the outskirts for stocking up. For a wider selection of restaurants head to Gubbio.
SPELLO
This beautiful medieval town is surrounded by walls and today, is probably most known for its famous flower festival, the Infiorata.
